The Kesivan Naidoo Big Band Experience
arranged by Adrian Mears

20:00 – Turnhalle

Kesivan Naidoo is unarguably the most eminent South African drummer of his generation. This is a cat who honed his sense of sonic spectacle with such jazz giants as Miriam Makeba, Bheki Mseleku, Louis Moholo-Moholo and more. This time with the masters was what Naidoo channeled in his classic 2014 album, Brotherhood. At a sold-out Carnegie Hall premiere, no less. Dig it? Now the Basel-based Naidoo is reimagining Brotherhood as a Big Band experience alongside celebrated trombonist and arranger Adrian Mears.

Kesivan Naidoo (dr/comp), Adrian Mears (cond), Reto Suhner (as/fl), Tara Sarter (as), Victoria Mozalevskaya (ts), Camila Nebbia (ts), Benedikt Reising (bs/bcl), Dave Blaser (tp), Lukas Thöni (tp), Jaronas Höhener (tp), Jannicke Hagen (tp), Andreas Tschopp (tb), Julia Rüffert (tb), Nina Thöni (tb), Maxine Troglauer (btb), Olga Reznichenko (p), Claude Meier (b), Manuel Sidler (g)

Sofia Salvo Sola Set

It’s algebra class squared, slept badly, homework forgotten. Suddenly a shrill bell, deafening, liberatory, magnificent. That would be a rough idea of how Sofia Salvo sounds. In 2019 she moved Buenos Aires to Berlin for good, since then she’s become an integral part of the local improvisation scene. With a breathtaking diversity of sounds, her sonic creations hover between acoustic noise and darkly introspective melodies.

It’s 40˚ in the shade on the banks of the Aare. The smooth pebbles, the cool river… today it’s possible to breath under water. And to fly. Drums, piano and saxophone included. This all-star band from the north floats through the night on sonic clouds and paints polka dots on the celestial firmament. Free improvisation frolics hand-in-hand with Tara Sarter’s compositions and draws us into the Now. Are they the Benjamin Buttons of Jazz, or why else would they be playing together as if they had just gigged at a 65th wedding anniversary? Music from the future.
