20:00 Gamut Plays Tobias Meier (CH)

Silvan Schmid (tp), Tapiwa Svosve (as), Tobias Pfister (ts), Philipp Eden (p), Vojko Huter (g), Xaver Rüegg (b), Paul Amereller (dr), Tobias Meier (comp)

Gamut: that means all the notes at once, or all the colors at once, or also a town in the Philippines whose temperature today is a balmy 28˚C. Or: a pile of the finest young minds of the Zurich jazz scene — all at once. Young indeed: when the group formed in 2016, the members were still learning how to swim. Since then, they’ve gotten mouths talking and feet walking. At the invitation of Jazzwerkstatt, they’ve pulled an annual program out of their hat, just like that. Bern has the honor of the world premiere of music by Tobias Meier — performed by the Gamut Collective of Zurich.

William Parker is not just one of the most important bassists of the international free scene, he’s also a longtime composer, author and pedagogue. His musical universe includes compositions for opera, film, ballet small band, solo instruments and larger ensembles. For the second part of his stop in Bern, the Jazzwerkstatt has organized a top-notch international All-Star Band to do justice to Parker’s work as composer and bandleader.

22:30 Nils Berg Cinemascope (SE)

Nils Berg (woodwinds/video), Josef Kallerdahl (b), Christopher Cantillo (dr)

For every song a new band. The “Fellini of Swedish jazz,” Nils Berg, and his band Cinemascope invite a shy Japanese flutist, a couple of giggling teenagers from Brunei and an Afghan shepherd one after another up onto stage. With a bit of help from Youtube and a projector. And with such finesse and sensitivity that the boundaries disappear between band, virtual guest, concert hall and the rest of the world.
