20:00 HIKIKOMORI
Since the first day of school—at the latest—we’re all familiar with the frustration of the group. The need to take other people into consideration. The desire to belong somewhere, to someone. Even people who claim to be loners define themselves in terms of their separation from the group; individuals don’t exist alone, but among many others. In Hikikomori, Joana Aderi has set to music the daily struggle to find one’s place—and the daily failure to be part of the group. Among other things, integration is always an offense to our narcissistic desire for attention. How does the dethroned narcissist inside all of us sound? Or the fear to which we all fall prey, the fear of not measuring up? Aderi approaches this dark issue with a healthy portion of blues and soul, lighthearted and able to laugh at herself. A soundtrack for the withdrawal from society.

21:15 4Art
More is more, the pianists Judith Wegmann and Marlies Debacker must have thought. It was on a Cologne stage that they first felt their musical hearts beat as one; from that day forward they were a team. Not long afterward, they doubled down with the duo Nachschattengeräusche. Ever since, this double-the-fun quartet has explored the depths of sound and space, searching for moments of poetry, the kind of moment you wish would last forever. At the Jazzwerkstatt 22, the four improvisers will be playing selections from their new album, Things In Between.

22:30 13 Year Cicada
The Berlin trio 13 Year Cicada is on a mission to lend musical form to everyday insanity, with the help of drums, bass, synthesizer and samplers. The only stipulation is that as much fun as possible should be had. The result sounds like math rock, or pop, or a glitched-out entry to the Eurovision Song Contest, slathered with mud. Their most recent release, Four Track Mind, consists of two interrelated tracks about the mantra “longlongshortlongshortlonglongshortshortlonglongshort” and the apocalypse.
