20:00 Beyond w/ Bernhardt feat. Jelena Kuljic
The theater composer and electronicist Friederike Bernhardt was initially courted by the stylistically diverse musicians of this ensemble, who sought to add her electronic stylings to their aural spectrum—but it wasn’t too long before no one knew which way was up, which was the chicken and which the egg… The ensemble gets sampled, repurposed, finds its way to a novel balance between the purely electronic and the live and acoustic. The first-time addition of the singer and actress Jelena Kuljić means a very special premiere at the Jazzwerkstatt 22: opposing powers will shake the penetratingly melodic foundations of the band, in an open dynamic of giving and taking. Beyond all, indeed.
Friederike Bernhardt (synth, electronics), Neasa Ní Bhriain (vla), Olga Reznichenko (keys), Damian Dalla Torre (bcl), Steffi Narr (g), Markus Rom (g), Lorenz Heigenhuber (b), Jan Roth (dr), Jelena Kuljić (voc, text)
21:15 OTTO
The three musicians of Otto all play tapan, a Bulgarian drum that produces only two tones, as well as metal percussion (gongs, bronze plate). This purposefully minimalist instrumentation underscores the gradual development in Otto’s music. Traditional Bulgarian rhythms are interwoven with improvisation; the subtle variation of timbre and rhythm generate a transcendental cycle.
