Ralph Alessi New Group
20:00 – Turnhalle

Fearless, playful, transcendent. Listening to his improvisations, it becomes clear why one speaks of playing music. Ralph Alessi is one of the leading protagonists of the New York avant-garde and has worked with Steve Coleman, Ravi Coltrane, Jason Moran, Sam Rivers, Tim Berne, Uri Caine, Don Byron and many others. Nowadays he commutes between Brooklyn and Bern. At the Jazzwerkstatt he’s presenting a brand-new project with some of the most famous musicians between the Baltic and Lake Constance. What they all have in common is the desire to give up control and let the sound take over.

Lina Tinérun
21:15 – Turnhalle

Spurred on by the desire to find their own sound, Lina Tinérun was born in early 2020. The quartet’s courage to question the status quo can be both heard and felt, most notably in Damaris Brendle’s idiosyncratic compositions and the unusual line-up. This opens up wide spaces for lively music, rich in contrasts, in which fantasy language serves as a link — between abstract underground worlds and lyrical sound paintings, between improvisation and composition.

Aya Metwalli
22:30 – Turnhalle

Described as “a musical enigma” by the Guardian and as a musician who has “crafted a spellbinding brand of anti-pop” by Pitchfork, Aya uses analog synthesizers to produce gritty textures and strange, unsettling soundscapes. Heavily influenced by Arabic pop and classic melodies, Aya modulates her voice with electronics to delve even deeper into a world of eeriness. She uses heavy drones and drum machines to create a distorted, industrial sonic landscape marrying noise with melody. Strange sounds cushion the yowling of a distressed feline all alone in the wild.
