ORCHESTRE TOUT PETIT JEAN TINGUELY

Sound installation

The Orchestre Tout Petit Jean Tinguely is a sound installation based around an old East German double bass that was saved from being destroyed. Vincent Bertholet, initiator of the absurdist Orchestre Tout Puissant Marcel Duchamp, is also the father of this “tiny” orchestra. In the tradition of the artist Tinguely and his worthy successors such as Pierre Bastien or Frédéric Le Junter, the Orchestre Tout Petit is a poetic attempt to breathe new life into some of the objects in our society that are at the end of their life cycle.

This quartet brings together some of the most exciting representatives of the underground music scene in both Americas. Shuttling between new music and free improvisation, between Europe and America, the band has been around since 2022, and the members’ stories read like encyclopaedias of the new scene. They have played with at least everyone, founded labels and festivals, and turn music genres inside out like others do their pockets.

The trio shares a penchant for abstract and electro-acoustic materials, navigating together in a wildly mastered fusion of timbres, chiseled from its raw state and writhing like a talkative carnivorous plant. A sonic and visual stop and go in which you will find drums, objects, an accordion bordering on electronic sounds and synthetic vibrations, an unrecognizable electrified saxophone, a percussive vinyl turntable, samples of field recordings and so many words collected over the course of travels…. all to draw a soundscape in perpetual motion, playful and restless, inventive and insatiable, like playing on embers and with a core of sharp humor and staggering dynamics.

When the grief over loss is so strong that you literally dissolve into tears it should be turned into a band name, thought the three musicians, who were only young but still decided to just carry on playing. The songs are about the all-stars’ lovesickness and hopelessness, but also about the newcomers’ deep zest for life and peace without a qualifier. Sonically, the three create a multiverse of shamelessly reduced singer-songwriter intimacy, solid band coolness and snowstorms with bricks for snowflakes.
